Jo-Anne Gillis

Artist statement Jo-Anne Gillis As a potter, with many years of experience, creating hand built vessels and sculptural forms, my work is a reflection of my connection to the natural beauty and permanence of clay. My creative process involves the manipulation of hand thrown textured slabs of clay to construct the form. My focus is on the texture and surface patterns that enhance the form, or as in the example of the breast-plates, to describe a life’s journey. It has been said that clay has a language of its own, or that it speaks for itself. For me, the pottery is about creating pieces that inherently reflect the natural characteristics of the material: the rough texture, the plasticity, the responsiveness, and the history of the craft of pottery, and the art of sculpture. Looking forward to sharing my experience and displaying my work at the Lawrence House.
